Jon Jay shines as St. Louis Cardinals defeat Baltimore Orioles 9-6 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ out-fielder, Jon Jay displayed an outstanding performance as he went 3-for-5 with an average of .311 and hit three RBIs in the Cardinals’ 9-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park, Baltimore on June 30.
The Cardinals were able to sweep the Orioles 3-0 in a three-game series at Baltimore.
In the first inning, Ryan Theriot hit a single-run shot to left-field but Jay was struck-out swinging and Matt Holliday grounded out to first base without contributing any run for the Cardinals. Same was the case with the Orioles batters as they got out
at the bottom of the first inning.
At the top of the second inning, the Cardinals’ batters got off the mark by adding two runs and got a 2-0 lead. David Freese posted a single run when Tony Cruz singled to centre-field and Yadier Molina scored one run on the sacrifice fly of Skip Schumaker
towards right-field. The Cardinals raised their lead 4-0 during the third inning when Lance Berkman hit a solo homer (432 feet) to left-field and Holliday scored one run.
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals’ batters stepped on the gas to explode four runs while the Orioles opened their scoring account by posting three runs. Cruz, Schumaker and Theriot each singled while Jay homered (392 feet) towards left-centre to end the
four-run campaign for the Cardinals.
On the other side, Nolan Reimold hit a three-run homer (409 feet) to centre-field while Matt Wieters and Mark Reynolds both scored the last two runs of the fourth. The score-board was 8-3 after the fourth inning. During the fifth inning, the batters failed
to show their abilities in front of the tricky pitches.
Jaime Garcia pitched just over five innings with an ERA of 3.33 and allowed five runs on 10 hits including five earned runs. He was able to strike-out only three batters and gave up just one walk on 89 pitches. In the sixth inning, the Orioles put two runs
to reduce their lead 8-5 as Reynolds homered (376 feet) to left-centre and Wieters posted the second run.
Berkman hit his second homer (403 feet) of the game in the seventh inning towards right-field to extend the Cardinals’ lead 9-5. During the eighth inning, Derrek Lee added one run when Reimold reached to third base on an infield single. In the end, the Cardinals
took a comprehensive victory over the Orioles.
