Jon Jones: I do not owe anybody anything – UFC News
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones believes he has done enough for the sport already and he does not owe anyone anything. Jones, who has absorbed enough hits after UFC 151’s cancellation, is of the view that he has been insulted more than any other
fighter.
“I've been dealing with a lot of controversy. A lot of insults right now,” said Jones in his recent interview.
“People tell me, 'You're the champ, you've got to take the fight. Being the champ wasn't given to me,” added the angry champion who has had enough of criticism already.
“I don't owe anybody anything.”
Jones was scheduled to fight Dan Henderson at UFC 151. Due to an injury suffered by Henderson, he backed out of the show leaving Jones with the only choice of fighting another opponent. President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White came to rescue,
by trying to replace Henderson with ‘The American Gangster’ Chael Sonnen.
Unfortunately, Jones was not ready to change his opponent. He bluntly refused White, saying he will not fight Sonnen with just an eight-day notice. White was disappointed with Jones’ attitude and blamed the entire scenario on him.
In a press conference, while announcing the annulment of UFC 151, White criticised Jones for his actions. Later on, in an interview, White revealed that he was disgusted with Jones refusal to fight Chael Sonnen. According to White, Jones made a selfish choice,
as he should have had thought about the undercard fighters, who fight for a living.
Jones apologised to the fans and the undercard fighters but maintained that he had to do what was best for him.
“I had to do what's right for myself by turning down that fight, Dana had to do what was right for himself by putting the blame on everyone else except for himself,” said the light heavyweight champion.
As of now, Jones is scheduled to face Vitor Belfort at UFC 152. Considering the pressure he is in right now, Jones is afraid that all of this might hurt his performance. On the other hand, he believes his sweet relationship with White is over for good.
