Jon Jones: I’m a championship fighter and Chael is not – UFC News
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones believes if he defeats The American Gangster Chael Sonnen next year, it would clear a lot of things for him. Surprisingly, Jones, who once claimed he does not need to prove anything against Sonnen, is now on admitting
the fact that Sonnen plays an important role in defining his career.
“Beating Chael will help me to have closure of this whole situation,” said Jones. “I absolutely know I can beat Chael, with my skill-set, youth, my versatility. I’m a championship fighter and Chael is not.”
While most fans are believing that Jones accepted the fight against Sonnen for a hefty pay cheque, ‘Bones’ wants them to know it is just due to the situation that has been created. On the other hand, Sonnen is quite of his trash-talking skills, as he believes
he talked Jones out to fight him.
“Welcome to life. ... None of these guys wanted to fight Jon Jones. Not one of these guys said, ‘I’ll fight Chael.’ And I have no problem taking a tune-up fight, and slapping any of those guys around. ... I can talk. I talked a cat out of a tree today. Good
for me. Chalk one more up for the bad guy,” said Sonnen regarding fellow fighters who are now complaining that they deserved a shot at the light heavyweight champion instead of The American Gangster.
The situation has turned ugly, since Sonnen apparently did not deserve the title shot. He is yet to make his light heavyweight comeback, which should have decided whether he deserves the title shot or not. Sonnen will be facing Tim Boetsch in December in
his comeback bout. If he wins, he will surely be among the top contenders to face Jones. However, if he loses then a fight against Jones would make no sense.
It should be noted here that President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship has defended the decision saying the ‘situation’ called for it. According to White, Jones will not be fighting until next year as he is going into rehab for a ligament injury he
suffered against Vitor Belfort.
