Jon Jones: Just two months ago I had the whole world calling me a sissy – UFC News
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones believes accepting to fight former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen was a sensible decision on his end. According to Jones, people who are now criticising him for giving Sonnen an opportunity he did not deserve,
are the same ones who were calling him a sissy two months ago.
“Just two months ago I had the whole world calling me a sissy and a wuss and saying that I’m afraid of Chael Sonnen, and even my own fans in my hometown questioned why I wouldn’t fight him,” said Jones during TUF 17’s press conference.
“And it seems like a lot of people have jumped on this train of Chael not deserving a title shot, but they jumped on that train a little too late. I think I’m over the fact of whether he deserves it or not, and I’m getting more realistic with the fact that
the fans really want it. And without the fans, who are any of us?”
For the first time in his career, Jones has lashed out on his fans and naysayers. He is usually the type of guy who is stern and knows what to do. He is hardly ever moved by what others think and say about him. For instance, his decision of not fighting
Sonnen at UFC 151 led the entire card to cancellation but Jones was immovable. He did not surrender to the will of Dana White and Sonnen, believing that Sonnen needs to first prove his mark in the light heavyweight division before getting a title shot.
Now, Jones has accepted to fight Sonnen, a decision that many think has been motivated by a hefty paycheque. However, the light heavyweight champion insists it had nothing to do with money instead, he had to fight Sonnen in order to show everyone that the
American Gangster stands no chance against him.
If nothing else, Jones wants to prove that the former middleweight contender is not a championship fighter. According to Jones, defeating Sonnen will be part of his legacy and he wants to accomplish it by all means necessary.
