Jon Jones as the honorary race official at 54th Annual Daytona NASCAR sprint event – UFC news
Jon Jones, Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC’s) current light heavyweight champion, has been given the honour to become part of America’s historical Daytona 500 sprint cup series as honorary race official, a trend that Daytona’s management had been following
for the past few years.
Jones, a name that resonates in the mind of mixed martial art fans when it comes to UFC, has become an icon in his beloved sport. Infamous by the name Bones, the American brawler has defended his title twice against names such as Lyoto Machida and Quinton
Jackson.
Jon achieved a landmark when he made Machida tap out after grabbing him in his deadly guillotine choke. Machida is a man that is feared by almost the whole of UFC roster since he has collected notable victories over names such as Tito Ortiz, Thiago Silva,
Rashad Evans, B. J. Penn and others.
Jones is the most appropriate name when it comes to representing the apex mixed martial art brand UFC, the reason why he most probably has been invited by President Joie Chitwood III.
Joie while making the announcement said, “Jon ‘Bones’ Jones is a huge star in mixed martial arts. We are excited to welcome him to the ‘World Center of Racing’ and have him be a part of the pre-race ceremonies for NASCAR’s biggest, richest and most prestigious
race.”
According to the details Jones will perform the responsibilities of a race official in honorary capacity and will participate in different ceremonies before and after the race such as attending the driver’s gathering and sitting in the honorary car designated
specifically for the guest officials.
Jones will cover a distance of 200 laps and will start his journey from 43-car field and ahead. Bones while sharing his view point at the privilege said, “I am thrilled to be able to serve as Honorary Race Official at this year's Daytona 500, NASCAR's premier
event. Like the UFC, NASCAR has a passionate and knowledgeable fan base, and I am honored that I will get to share this experience with them.”
Jon Jones, the 2011 fighter of the year, is currently scheduled to defend his light heavyweight title against his former friend and arch rival Rashad Evans on April 21, 2012 at UFC 145.
Daytona 500 will take place at Daytona International Speedway which is setup at Daytona Beach, Florida on February 26, 2012 and will be the 54th annual event in which 43 drivers will participate for the number one American NASCAR driver position.
