Jon Jones defends decision of not facing Chael Sonnen at UFC 151 – UFC News
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defends his decision of not facing ‘The American Gangster’ Chael Sonnen at UFC 151. Jones has previously spoken about the entire situation, apologising to the fans and the undercard fighters who suffered a great deal
due to the card’s cancellation. However, Jones has repeatedly stated that he did what was important for him.
Now, Jones is starting to defend his decision. Jones was initially scheduled to fight Dan Henderson at UFC 151 but due to an injury sustained by the latter the fight fell apart. President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White jumped in to save
the card by replacing Henderson with Chael Sonnen. However, Jones declined the offer of fighting Chael Sonnen, saying he will not change his opponents at the eleventh hour.
“It all seemed too suspicious that he was calling me out way before I had a clue my opponent was hurt. People don’t realize Chael Sonnen and Dan Henderson are actually best friends. Chael Sonnen knew his teammate was hurt, he obviously knew his teammate
his was hurt. He had prepared up to three weeks for me. That would give me eight days, when he had three weeks,” said Jones.
It should be noted here that White defended his decision of using Sonnen as a replacement saying that the trash-talk between Sonnen and Jones had created excitement for fans already. However, Jones did not buy the excuse. The light heavyweight champion believed
Sonnen did not deserve the shot.
As of now, Jones does not regret his decision, even though he admits that the repercussions of the entire situation went bad.
Jones is currently scheduled to face Vitor Belfort at UFC 152. While he believes he is the one who will walk out victorious, Belfort believes it is about time for Jones to give up his title. According to Belfort, it is a fight between an old lion and a new
fighter. On the other hand, Jones believes his youth is his perfect weapon against Belfort, regardless of the experience the Brazilian has in mixed martial arts. If Belfort defeats Jones, it will be the end of a long streak.
