Jon Jones named Fighter of the Year at Fighters Only 2011 World MMA Awards – UFC News
Jon Jones, the mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter from Rochester, New York bagged the coveted Fighter of the Year Award. The event he was named with the honor was the Fighters Only 2011 World MMA Awards. The awards, where only the
MMA fighters were invited and were given such awards was held in Las Vegas at the Palms Casino Resort.
The 24-year old fighter Jones, nicknamed Bones, was given the Fighter of the Year Award because of his resilient and determinant fighting style and tactics used in the ring. He won all of his three fights, which he took part in
this year. He defeated Ryan Bader at UFC 126 in February 2011 in the second round. His second win in the year came at UFC 128 in March 2011, where he defeated Mauricio Rua by a technical knockout. At UFC 135, he won his third bout of 2011 against Quinton Jackson
in September 2011.
For the Fighter of the Year Award, Jones was in straight competition against MMA fighters with the likes of Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Dominick Cruz and Dan Henderson. Jones was given the award for his great wins this year, which
were consistent and weighted more than the wins taken by the fellow nominees.
Jones also got an added advantage for he won his UFC light heavyweight championship at UFC 128 by winning against Mauricio Rua and then successfully defended it against Quinton Jackson at UFC 135. The other MMA fighters who took
home awards included Alistair Overeem, who won the International Fighter of the Year Award and Anderson Silva who won the KO of the Year Award for his knockout win at UFC 126 over Vitor Belfort.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was named as the Promotion of the Year and UFC CEO Dana White was named Leading Man of the Year. The Fight of the Year Award for given to the Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard bout at UFC 125
for the lightweight championship, while Shawn Tompkins , who died in August 2011 was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. South Korean MMA fighter, Chan Sung Jung was awarded with the Submission of the Year Award for his submission move, Spine Crack, which
he applied to win the bout against Leonard Garcia at UFC Fight Night 24 in March 2011.
