Jon Jones wants to be the heavyweight champion sometime soon – UFC News
It seems like light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is not yet satisfied with his excellent run in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. ‘Bones’ is already rated among the best mixed martial artists of all times, yet he feels like there should be more to his
legacy in the UFC. The American fighter wants to go ahead to grab the heavyweight champion, once he feels he is ready for it.
“I respect the champions and the top-ranked guys in the heavyweight division,” said Jones in an interview with USA Today. “I realize that me, at my current size, the odds would be majorly against me, so it would be about doing it right, doing it with a lot
of passion, and having fun with the game. I'll do it right when that time comes, I'll give it my all, and I'll expect to be a winner.”
However, Jones still has a lot to do in his division, such as defeating the top contenders, which includes the likes of Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida. Although he has done most of it already, there is still a lot for the American champion
to prove in the division.
His recent submission win over old-school fighter Vitor Belfort was much praised even by his critics. While most of them believed Jones does not have the ability to take punches, he proved it against Belfort that he indeed has an iron-head, and ribs for
that matter of fact.
For now, Jones is scheduled to fight the American Gangster Chael Sonnen on The Ultimate Fighter season 17. Although Chael was not the number one contender, he got the title shot by merely being involved in a verbal spat with Jones. On the other hand, the
true contenders were Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson, who will have to now wait to get the title shot they deserve.
In his interview last week, Jones spoke of how he is trying to improve his UFC run. According to the light heavyweight champion, he has hired a full-time nutritionist who is trying to work on the American’s diet in order to make him healthier and better
in every aspect of the sport.
