Jon Lester’s economical pitching helps Boston Red Sox rout Los Angeles Angels, 4-3: MLB Update
Boston Red Sox’ starter, Jon Lester, had a notable day as he didn’t allow any run on four hits which helped the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 victory against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in California on April 22.
Lester said of his pitching strategy as, “I had good fastball command early, but it got away from me a little bit. I nitpicked a little bit and got into some deep counts, and there were a lot of foul balls. I just didn't get that early contact that
I needed.”
Lester started the game with an effective plan and pitched all throws with a good line and length. He struck out eight batters in the sixth-inning and left the ball due to high the pitch count. The Boston’s closer, Jonathan Papelbon, pitched in the
ninth-inning for his first save.
It proved to be a superb game for Lester, as he gave away two walks in 111 pitches and led off the Red Sox with 4-0 lead. The Boston’s starting pitchers threw with an earned runs average (ERA) of 1.19 and permitted just two ERA so far in the last seven
games. The Red Sox was much a improved side after losing six straight games at the start of the season. Now they have a win-loss record of 8-5.
The Boston’s two relievers, Matt Albers and Bobby Jenks both, had a tough day as they allowed runs to the Angels without striking any batter out. They both gave two runs batted in (RBIs) in the seventh and eighth-inning, respectively.
J.D. Drew took an RBI single to complete his fourth run in the sixth inning and extended the Boston’s lead. Carl Crawford contributed equally by making runs on a fly-ball towards the right centre position.
The Boston’s Manager, Terry Francona, pleased with the team’s performance, said, “I remember back about the middle of that homestand, somebody asked me: 'What's the best way to get it going?'And I said, 'A time or two through the rotation and have
them give us a chance every night.' And that's exactly what's happened.”
On the other side, the Angels’ starter, Dan Haren, disappointed his team's officials with his shaky performance. He gave up four runs on five hits including two earned runs and six strike-outs in six inning pitches.
