Jon Niese fetches $25.5 million in five year contract extension deal with New York Mets - MLB
The highly speculated five year extension deal with Jon Niese has been given final shape, as the New York Mets announce modalities of a $25.5 million contract. According to initial reports, Mets have gone all-out to secure him for a long time period.
This is why team option for 2017 and 2018 has also been inked in the deal, with an effect of restraining Niese for years to come.
Regardless of his performance in the season, he will see his hands tied for the next half decade or so.
In light of a fact that Niese has begun journey toward the prime of his career, he must have been under troubling predicament in build up to final deal.
Although his Spring ERA does not show much of him, improvements he has shown on few critical areas can be pivotal to an extent of recording dramatic wins for his side.
Since this is what Mets need most at the moment, they have their reasons to go after him so passionately.
Most of the times when a player passes a particular age in his career, he starts analysing things better and that directly results into a marked improvement in skills.
For a club to nurture a player and condone him even when he is not best for the side is considered an investment. When the same player switches to some other club at such a time of his career that he will be unleashing his best, latter incurs huge damage
to their prospects.
Same eventuality perhaps haunted the Mets and thus they shielded their interest beforehand. In anticipation of Niese reaching the pinnacle of his talent in the next couple of years, Mets aim to enjoy dividends of years of low performances by Niese they tolerated.
As the Mets are now settled with Niese, their next latch is going to be on R.A. Dickey. Intricacies of potential deal are far from known, as sources suggest that the Mets will be looking to secure a 2013 option before renewing the contract.
Criticism from various quarters is coming. Mets’ going after a player having an ordinary career record is being denounced vehemently.
Critics believe the Mets may have spent the same money on acquiring new players. How fruitful their decision of retaining Niese will prove will be determined by his performance in the next few seasons.
