Jon Niese says he will be surprised if David Wright does not stay with New York Mets-MLB Update
Left-handed pitcher for New York Mets, Jon Niese has stated that David Wright will most probably be signed by the club. It is highly unlikely that a deal does not take place between both parties, according to him.
Niese has spoken highly about Wright, calling him a source of pride for the club.
Jonathon has talked about tremendous success Wright enjoyed by playing for New York. Records that he made as a part of the club are unheard of in the history of the organisation. Accumulating such a huge number of hits and RBIs shows his class as a player.
He is like Chipper Jones for the Mets. Just like the Atlanta Braves kept Jones in the club throughout his career, the Mets are going to do the same with Wright.
Niese derives his optimism from the fact that Wright loves playing for the city. Similarly, the organisation is equally interested in retaining him.
According to the reports, Wright has been offered an eight-year $140 million contract. The response to it has yet to come from Wright and his agent.
Although the deal is one of the most expensive in many ways in the history of the Mets, Wright has his concerns. The structure of the agreement is such that amount of per year salary will increase with the passage of time, resulting in a decline in the value
of money.
Niese is hopeful that Wright will end up his career with the club.
“He’s a guy that leads by example, kind of like Chipper [Jones] did with Atlanta, and I know he wants to be what Chipper was with Atlanta,” said Niese. “He is the face of the franchise, and he wants to be a part of it throughout his whole Mets career and
you have to respect a guy like that. I know the love [Wright] has for the city and how he wants to be with the Mets organization his whole career and I would definitely be surprised if he doesn’t.”
Within the next few days, the proposed contract by New York will possibly be confirmed.
It will be interesting to see whether some changes are made to the offer or if it will be accepted right away by Wright.
