Jon Niese’s contract extension deal reveals plans New York Mets have for future - MLB Update
After losing Jose Reyes to Miami Marlins and leaving fans unhappy as a result, New York Mets have resorted to a “catching at straw” approach. Intent on to eschew arbitration years and free agency options, the Mets has signed a five year contract extension
deal with Niese. Official declaration is likely on Opening Day.
His free agency will occur in 2016, but with a renewed agreement, he has effectively become part of club for a long time period.
With this a notion has spread among fans that third baseman David Wright will also meet the same treatment. After all, he graces the club with his fabulous career batting ERA of .300 and 151 stolen bases and therefore deserves every single attempt for retention
before his contract comes to an end.
Even Davey Johnson, Washington Nationals’ current manager, speaks of his importance to the Mets and shares his surprise in case he says Mets do not award him a longer contract.
Citing a similar dilemma he said he faced for Nationals in the case of Ryan Zimmerman and as they eventually inked a $100 million agreement with him. According to him, retention of Wright should be a reality for Mets.
“The same thing we had with [Ryan] Zimmerman,” Johnson said.
Coming back to measures that the Mets are taking, one fears even when they are carrying it in order to have cushion against future money outflows, they may very well end up costing themselves more money.
For example, in a pursuit of insuring players’ switchover to other teams, they may overlook rather cheaper options they can have in the off-season.
This fear will look like a reality when seen in the context of fairly mediocre career ERA Niese possesses. His ERA of 4.39 is not that impressive and the fact he had been through Major League seasons and even during such a long time he hardly drew any compelling
distinction, he barely appears an option to go with.
While Mets streamline their financial spending, objectivity in decisions is something they cannot afford to lose sight of. By disregarding fans’ emotions and targeting what concerns the team most, they can make better decisions and hence can draw positive
results in the regular season.
