Jon Rauch is disheartened as he costs the New York Mets a loss - MLB Update
Soon after he gave up walk-off home run on Sunday, the relief pitcher Jon Rauch went to the locker room and vented his frustration on himself. Infuriated, he cursed the moments when he allowed such a loose pitch, which cost the New York Mets a loss.
All through the game, the Mets maintained relative dominance over the New York Yankees. At one time, they were well on their way to record victory.
However, when the game travelled to relievers and issue turned the matter of how well pitchers can restrain nerves and read situation under-pressure, the Mets stuttered and lost as a result.
The relief pitcher Jon Rauch was the most conspicuous scapegoat, as he allowed the winning run.
Rauch has always been vulnerable late in the innings, especially under the kind of scenario he came across on Sunday.
Worse thing, which hurt Rauch to the core was the fact that by and large he was going fine and only one poor throw led to the demise. Russell Martin became his undoing as he struck him the mammoth home run.
"Were you guys watching the game or no?" Rauch said. "Martin (expletive) hit it a mile. And I cost us the game. I made a couple good pitches and hung one, and he hit the ---- out of it."
Mets’ manager Terry Collins is concerned over the performance of relievers. It was not for the first time that edifice built up by the whole team was shattered by their relief pitcher during penultimate moments. Late-innings melt-downs have betrayed the
club on number of occasions.
The loss which Rauch caused was more painful in light of the fact that it allowed the Yankees to complete the sweep. Rauch truly understands how he led to the humiliation of his side and feels guilty for it.
Therefore, getting exasperated after the game can be condoned as a natural response to such an undesirable reality.
Collins will be making calculations for upcoming games and will be thinking over various relief pitching options.
The issue is serious and demands special recognition. Unless, reliability is ensured late in the innings, the Mets will keep experiencing such realities.
