Jon Scheyer Needs Improvement to boost his chances of NBA draft

Jon Scheyer is looking and feeling good toward the upcoming NBA draft; but he was predicted to be picked in the second round because of his evident shortcomings.

As he enters his senior season, Scheyer led the Blue Devils in categories that include steals, assists and three-point percentage. However, his numbers have gone down in some categories like field goal percentage and rebounds.

Scheyer, who was known to be a reliable spot up shooter, is currently on a critical status as far as his chances in the NBA draft are concerned. It was evident that his playing minutes have been reduced due to his inability to live up to the expectations of his coaches.

Aside from his decreased consistency and reliability on the floor, he is also a bit smaller and slower that made the scouts and coaches think twice whether to pick him or not.

He has also shown slight improvement in using his tools to be a good role player for his team. In addition to that, Scheyer is well known for his nice shooting. Last season, most of his shot selections include catch and shoot jumpers.

A Glenbrook North alumnus is definitely a deadly spot up shooter, scoring 1.36 points per possession on open spot up jumpers. Jon Scheyer can be also an asset in various ways. His high basketball IQ covers up for his limited athleticism. He can possibly create impact to his team with his excellent judgment; he will definitely make a good role player to any team. He may not execute fantastic plays but he is a reliable guard, who can execute plays well. His abilities to handle pressure and create situations for his teammates are factors that scouts will have to watch out for.

On the defensive end, Scheyer’s confidence and eagerness will help him to create a bit of an impact on the NBA draft. But his weaknesses will definitely bring him down. He lacks lateral quickness, and is considered as a poor defender.

Even though he has a good understanding of various fundamentals, manifested great efforts and awareness, his lack of physical strength and foot work will be double negative in his bid in the upcoming NBA draft. To sum it up, Scheyer has strengths and weaknesses which will be used to gauge his chances on being picked in the draft. But his weaknesses are far more impacting than his little physical strength.

Although, his excellent basketball IQ and winning attitude are great factors in his game; the fact still remains that his liabilities are greater factors to be considered as one high NBA prospect.

His poor field goal percentage, lack of physical prowess, and defensive ability are huge hindrances on his chances on being an NBA prospect. In addition to that, his consistency and lack of athleticism have further put his chances to the test. At 6’5, and 180 lbs, he is not as strong as any other player of his height. He is also not as quick as other NBA guards, which just means that he may not be that prepared to join the big league.

Jon may be a star player in college but it does not mean that he can also be a great player in the professional league. He needs to work really hard to prove himself, and the NBA scouts that he is worth drafting, worth trying because he has the sheer determination to hone his skills and be a better player.

If he is determined to play in the big league, he should take certain steps to attract scouts and prove them that he can improve far, far better.
