Jon Welsh to fly home – Rugby News Update
Jon Welsh, the 25-year-old Scotland prop has dislocated his shoulder and has been ruled out of Scotland’s summer tour.
After winning the game against Australia at Newcastle 9-6, due to the penalty kicking ability of Greig Laidlaw the Scottish side travels to Fiji and Samoa to play the Pacific nations for a test match each. However, Welsh, who was on the bench for those matches
will not be available, and the team has called for replacements.
One person who has joined the squad is Max Evans, the 28-year-old Castres' centre. He was playing for Castres over the weekend and joined the squad immediately upon his release.
"All I can do is train well and put my hand up for selection," Evans said. "The coaches will decide whatever they see best and I will have to see what happens. Any opportunity to play for Scotland, and any Scotland game missed, is upsetting.”
He further added, “There was maybe a brief moment when I was not sure if I would be playing against Toulouse [in the semi-final] or Australia, but it was much easier for me to focus on the game with Castres and then if there was any change it would look
after itself.”
Evans will be joined up in the squad by Moray Low, the 27-year-old Glasgow prop, as a replacement for the injured Welsh. It is likely that Low will be on the bench and will be used in case there are further injuries. He made his debut against France at Stade
de France, on February 14, 2009, and has played 15 matches, starting 9 and coming on as a substitute 6 times. He last played an international match against Italy at Murrayfield, on August 20, 2011. This is a chance for him to show Andy Robinson, the head coach
of Scotland, that he deserves further chances.
Welsh would have been disappointed to get injured when his international career is just getting off. The prop made his international debut against Italy at Rome, on March 17, 2012, and this is the only international he has played so far.
Scotland will be confident going to Fiji and will be hoping to win.
