Jonas Blixt gets an inch closer to his first PGA title at Frys.com Open
John Mallinger maybe leading the pack at CordeValle but Swede Jonas Blixt is not far behind. Blixt matched his first round score by shooting five-under 66, on a day when most of the golfers struggled to get going.
The world number 115th has recently been on a birdie spree. At the Shriners for Hospital Open, the Swede shot 25 birdies in four rounds.
However, if he manages to control his bogeys, then he would enjoy success more often.
Blixt started slowly on Saturday. After a few pars, he bogeyed the 3rd hole but evened up his score for the day by birdying the 9th. However, five birdies in the last eight holes really set the day up for him.
"The front nine is a little harder," said Blixt, coming off a third-place finish last week in Las Vegas. "The back nine you can make a couple birdies. Hopefully, I can finish like I did today".
Jonas Blixt is only two shots adrift of the leader, Mallinger, and another similar round on Sunday would surely land in his first title on the tour. Mallinger was just a touch skeptical of his game on Saturday.
"It was a little scrappy," said Mallinger, who has a two-shot lead. "I didn't have my best off the tee, but I started hitting some good shots coming in. I hit a lot of good putts that just didn't fall”.
When Blixt was asked about his plans for Sunday he said, "Make birdies." Considering the day other golfers had, Jonas’ round is a good one. Many top players struggled on Saturday.
Nicolas Colsaerts could only manage an even par score. John Mallinger, although he is still on the top, lost a shot from his lead margin, after he shot a mediocre one-under 70.
Billy Horschel, who was T2 after the second round, slumped to T19 after he could only manage a two-over on Saturday.
Vijay Singh climbed up the ladder and gave himself an outside chance to win the title at Frys.com Open by carding two consecutive 66’s.
The former world number one is four shots adrift of the leader but another low round on Sunday would surely make things interesting.
