Jonas Blixt holds his nerve for his maiden title
Finally, the good run of form for Jonas Blixt has paid off. He landed in the first PGA Tour title of his career by edging out American Tim Petrovic, with the slightest of the margins.
For the last couple of tournaments, Blixt has been playing some excellent golf and here, at the CordeValle, his hard work paid off.
Blixt won the title by just one stroke. He showed the calmness and composure of a champion on the last few holes.
The Swede shot three-under 68, on a day when many other top names could not get going. 54-hole leader, John Mallinger slumped to a T4 finish after he shot one-over 72 on Sunday.
Jonas Blixt is the third PGA Tour rookie to win this year. His victory at the Frys.com Open has really boosted up his chances for the PGA Tour card for the next season.
The rookie had doubts about his game but, in the end, it worked out for him.
"The weird part is I've been working on some stuff with my swing, and I wasn't feeling completely 100 percent about my swing," Blixt said.
"I just told myself, 'Just give it a good hit every time and see what happens. Just focus. You can't do anything better than your best.' That's what I did on every shot".
The 28-year-old started the day two shots behind Mallinger but soon cancelled his lead by scoring two birdies.
He experienced a little lapse in concentration and there went the lead on the next two holes. However, he remained calm and poised to finish off the round nicely.
As soon as the Swede made the putt on the eighteenth, he was filed with joy and satisfaction. He had not only won the first tour title but he also defeated the likes of Nicolas Colsaerts and Ernie Els in the process.
Jonas Blixt had his family come down to the golf course to witness the history in the making and that really gave him some confidence.
"First of all, my family is here, so it's been really relaxed," Blixt said. "I've barely touched a golf club after a round, which is really weird for me. A lot of people would say that's really weird".
