Jonas Blixt off to a disappointing start in Puerto Rico Open – Golf News
Jonas Blixt, rookie on the PGA Tour, shot a four-over par 76 in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Open to make a disappointing start to his campaign, at the Trump International Golf Club, Puerto Rico, on Thursday, March 8, 2012.
Blixt teed off on the back nine of the course and carded a bogey and a birdie each to settle for the level par score in the half way of the round.
However, the front nine saw him struggle. He mixed his two birdies with three bogeys and one double bogey.
According to Blixt, he was still suffering the after-effects of the sinus infection that forced him to withdraw from last month’s Honda Classic.
He said that he was not able to control his shots because of the weakness and missed easy putts that cost him an over-par score in the end.
There was a point when he had a one-under par score after he was finished with 14 holes. However, his streak of bogey-triple, bogey-par-bogey starting from par-three sixth forced his score to go higher.
Blixt looked really disappointed as he went on playing a good game throughout the round and faltered in the end.
He said that he felt tired while reaching the final holes and his shots did not go the way he wanted them to.
Moreover, the strong gust of winds also caused a lot of troubles for the players on the course and Blixt was one of those who failed to offset the wind pressure on their shots.
Meanwhile, Matt Jones and George McNeill, both, scored six-under par 66 to share the top spot on the leaderboard.
McNeill played an error-free round, carding six birdies in total. On the other hand, Jones managed a total of five birdies, and an eagle against a single bogey that came on the par-four 12th.
"Almost every week if you shoot under par you're going to do well, but I think the wind the way it is, [you have to] just keep giving yourself chances to make birdies and not make mistakes, because there is plenty of trouble out there," Curtis said.
He also stated, "I was very fortunate, and I avoided it today and hit a lot of fairway and greens".
Ben Curtis also had a bogey-free round. He managed to score five birdies and finished third on the leaderboard with a one-shot deficit to the leaders.
