Jonas Blixt wins The Greenbrier Classic – Golf News
Jonas Blixt carded a three-under par 67 in the rain-delayed final round of The Greenbrier Classic to claim the second PGA Tour victory of his career.
The tournament was being staged at The Old White TPC, featuring a number of top notch players from different parts of the world.
Right from the beginning of the final round, he looked to overcome difficult playing conditions in White Sulphur Springs and played some brilliant shots on the course.
His first gain came at the fifth hole when he drained the ball into the hole for a birdie putt. He then added another shot to his scorecard on the ninth hole to reach the turn in two-under.
After recording a couple of birdies along with as many bogeys over the next four holes, he was in hunt for the top spot, along with four other players.
Meanwhile, when his rivals failed to post enough birdies to get to the top, Blixt birdied the 16th hole to take a solid two-shot lead entering the last two holes, which he maintained till the end of the event.
Talking to the reporters after claiming the victory, the Swede expressed his pleasure in finally recording a good, in fact, excellent finish this season.
"It has been a bad year for me but I just pulled it off," said Blixt after his first top-10 finish of the year. "I can't believe it. I'm just really happy."
The victory in the PGA Tour event also means that he will now be eligible to play in the first major golf championship of the upcoming season.
"A dream come true," added Blixt, whose first PGA Tour victory came at the Frys.com Open last year. "I watched (the Masters) when I was a kid. I always wanted to play there. It's a special place, almost like a religious experience
to be there. To play there, I've just got no words for it. It's so many dreams come true. It's one week and the whole year turns around. It's really special."
The overnight leader Johnson Wagner, in the meantime, struggled on day four and settled for a three-over par score, which pushed him back to share the second place on the leaderboard.
