Jonathan Borlee benefits from the absence of Kevin Borlee - Athletics news
This year’s ‘Meeting de Strasbourg et des DNA’ provided a real treat for athletics fans in France and the world abroad. As the event concluded on Sunday, June 12, it witnessed some of the best performances displayed by some world-class players.
The most prominent ones were those depicted by Jonathan Borlee, Alexis Copello and Benjamin Compaore. While Jonathan marked a European leading 400m distance in 45.04 seconds, Copello and Compaore, the triple jumpers successfully strived to hit the 17.29m
mark.
Jonathan, who had taken full advantage of the absence of Kevin Borlee, his twin brother, marked his dominance at the 400m distance and crossed the finishing line in 45.04 seconds. The results culminated in highlighting the Bulgarian runner’s clocked time
as the best by an European athlete this year.
Commenting upon his emphatic success, Jonathan, who hopes to display a better performance, said, “I’m happy with the time as I’m not yet prepared to run at 100 per cent since the season will be very long. Today my rhythm during the race was good, but I could
have run the first part a little bit faster. I managed to accelerate in the last bend.”
He revealed before media personnel that he had not yet gotten into the specific preparation which would help him hone his running skills further. The semi-finalist of the 2008 summer Olympics still hopes to observe improvement in the 200m contests which,
amid his improved health, are increasingly becoming favourite for him and where he had clocked a personal best of 20.42 seconds.
Dwelling upon his plans to appear in 200m meets, the 23-year-old runner, who also takes part in 4x400m relays, in which his team bagged a silver medal at the 2010 World Indoor Championships and a bronze medal at the 2010 European Championships, said, “I
used to avoid 200m in order to avoid injuries. But now that I’m more powerful, more physically stable, I hope I can go down to 20.30. But until the London Olympics, the goal is to runt eh 400m, as I think Kevin and I can do good things on the one-lap race.”
Provided that they are capable of sticking to their performances for the distance, he said that he, along with his brother, may opt for 800m run after the 2012 (London Olympics).
Just like the 400m meet, the triple jump contest at Strasbourg also provided an interesting sight for spectators as local athlete, Benjamin Compaore provided some real challenge to Cuban rival, Alexis Copello. Copello marked the first round with hitting
16.99m, which was instantly replied by the local athlete with a 17.29m effort.
The third round witnessed the French jumper narrowly fouling at 17.60m and compelled the Cuban to take some risk. The contest concluded by witnessing Compaore, the French star, who added up an emphatic 8 centimetres to his personal best.
