Jonathan Byrd remains in contention at the Greenbrier Classic
Jonathan Byrd carded a two-under par 68 in the second round of the Greenbrier Classic, to share the second spot at The Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs, on Friday, July 6, 2012.
Byrd got off to a good start and carded a birdie on the very first hole that he played. Another birdie on the seventh hole allowed him to go two-under for the round.
Thereafter, he failed to hold on to his nerves and displayed a poor game that made him suffer three bogeys between the eighth and the twelfth hole.
Yet, he did not lose his confidence and made a comeback with three birdies on the final seven holes of the day. He now sits one stroke behind the pace set by Webb Simpson at nine-under par 131.
Overall, he looked happy with his progress in the event, especially when he was battling with his health issues for the last few weeks.
“Today I felt a little better on the golf course physically and, you know, made eight birdies yesterday, five birdies today,” he said. “A little disappointed in some of the bogeys, I made three bogeys, but anytime I'm making five birdies a round I'm doing
a lot of things good”.
According to him, he could have done even better if he had avoided the three-bogey hiccup during the round. Yet, he was happy the way he finished his campaign while entering the weekend.
“I was proud of the way I finished,” he added. “Was playing real steady, had a lot of opportunities, was only 2-under through 8 and then had a little hiccup through 11, made 3 bogeys and just made some bad plays but fought back and made two good birdies
coming in”.
In the meantime, Charlie Beljan, Jeff Maggert, Jerry Kelly and Martin Flores also joined him on the leaderboard with the same two-round score.
However, Flores still had to complete his round, as the bad weather caused the play to be suspended. He will now play the final two holes on Saturday early morning.
J.B. Holmes and Charlie Wi were further a stroke back to share the seventh position on the leaderboard.
