Jonathan Davies compares George North to Welsh legend John Bevan
Former Welsh international Jonathan Davies has described George North as the new John Bevan.
The 18-year-old winger made an impressive start to his international career in Wales’ 25-29 defeat to South Africa, leading the former out-half Davies to draw comparisons of North with Welsh legend Bevan.
Bevan played for Wales and was a member of the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 1974. He then switched from Rugby Union to play Rugby League for Warrington and Great Britain.
Davies, who also converted to Rugby League, told Scrum V that there were similarities between the two wingers.
"That's the highest compliment I can pay George North. I thought John Bevan was an absolute legend of a player," said Davies.
North has impressed with club side the Scarlets this season and is expected to be included for Wales’ next Test match against Fiji on Friday 19 November.
The debutant scored a try against the Springboks on Saturday 13 November and was Wales’ top ball carrier in the match.
Davies believes that North can continue to impress at international level and paid tribute to the Scarlets for bringing the player through.
"I have to applaud the Scarlets for blooding the youngster. I didn't realise how good the kid was, but he's got everything to be a huge success at this level," said Davies.
Former Welsh scrum half Brynmor Williams agreed with Davies’ statement that North had many similarities with Bevan.
"[North has the] same size and same attitude. I just hope he has something like the career John had. It's a promising start to say the least," said Williams.
"When a youngster comes in on the wing, you hope he comes away with a decent game, but he was Wales' top carrier with 14, he made some great decisions and scored two tries—it was a wonderful start for him," added the former scrum-half.
