Jonathan De Veig blows away Stefan Borg in second round qualies – SkiStar Swedish Open 2011
Seeded eighth in the qualifying draws, Jonathan Dasnieres De Veig of France, forced his way through the second round of the qualies, after devastating the local hope, Stefan Borg, at SkiStar Swedish Open on Sunday.
Being played at Bastad, Sweden, the contest witnessed sheer dominance of the Frenchman throughout the game, with De Veig winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The eighth seed wrapped up victory in less than an hour’s time, moving into the final round of the qualifying draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
The contest remained totally one-sided all the way, with French supremacy been observed in every single minute of play. De Veig faced utterly no difficulty in outplaying his bleak Swede opponent and registered four out of six break points en route to victory. Borg hung in the contest for just 55 minutes before he submitted the game to his insistent opponent in the second set to end the Swede hopes in the competition.
24-year-old De Veig had an exceptional serve game, delivering 68 per on target and securing 11 out of 13 first serve points in the opener. He took hold of the contest from the very first minute, breaking the Swede serve in early to lead 3-0 in the opening set. Borg appeared in all sorts of confusions right from the beginning and played a number of errant shots ending long and wide of the court in the end.
The Swede failed to craft a single break opportunity in the first set and suffered second serve break in the sixth game to fall in a miserable condition in the competition. The aggressive French proved merciless in the opener and sealed the set at 6-1, taking just 25 minutes of play.
The French kept exacerbating Borg in the following set and De Veig gradually got more pace to rally pass him to victory. The second set took off with another early break from the Frenchman, getting into 3-1 lead. The Swede squandered away his maiden break chance of the contest to keep on his back foot and a second serve break from De Veig marked an end to the contest at 6-2, sending the French in to the final round draws of the Swedish Open qualifiers.
De Veig will now meet the second seeded German, Dustin Brown, in his next encounter for a place in the main draws of the ATP tournament.
