Jonathan De Veigy edges past Yann Marti into the main draw – Moselle Open 2011
Seeded at number four in the tournament, Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy of France, won his qualifying competition against the eight seeded Swiss contestant, Yann Marti, in the Moselle Open qualifiers on Monday night.
The enthralling contest took two hours and forty nine minutes of play to conclude, with the 24-year-old local contestant wrapping up victory in 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4, to move in to the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the Arènes de Metz, in Metz, France and De Veigy lived up to the expectations of his home crowd to come out as the winner. The Frenchman went through some real tough times in the contest, dropping the second set to his opponent, but recovered from the terrible slump with great mastery to seize victory in the end.
The fourth seeded De Veigy delivered 57 per cent of his serve on target but coughed seven double faults in the game. He compensated for the unforced errors very well by reeling off 45 out of 62 first serve points in the matchup, with Marti clinching just 31 out of 46.
The opening set was off to a steady start, with both men getting their eye in the game. No serve breaks were witnessed in the opening seven games but De Veigy eventually broke the drought in the eight h game to serve out of the first set at 6-3.
Tide turned in the following set, with Marti making a strong comeback in the contest and broke the fourth seed French in the second game to lead 3-0 early in the set. De Veigy retaliated with a break point conversion in the seventh, igniting a series of break points from both side to take the scores to 6-6. A tie breaker round came into play and the Swiss took the vital chance to clinch the set at 7-6(2) and levelled the matchup at one-all.
De Veigy forced his way back in the competition in the final set and registered two cracking serve breaks to fly away with victory at 6-4, booking a place in the first round of the main draws of the Moselle Open. He will take on seventh seeded German, Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday.
