Jonathan De Veigy races past Andreas Vinciguerra into 2nd round – SkiStar Swedish Open 2011
In another first round match of the day Frenchman Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy tested his fate against the Swedish wild card entrant, Andreas Vinciguerra. However there was no repeat of Michael Ryderstedt's success for compatriot
Vinciguerra who lost 6-1, 1-6 and 6-3 to the French, much to the dismay of the home crowd.
De Veigy had earlier defeated German player Dustin Brown qualifying for a place here in the main draws.
Opening the set in a flamboyant manner, De Veigy took a lead right from the beginning. With the exception of his double faults, of which he had four, De Veigy served brilliantly and barraged his opponents with a volley of powerful
shots. De Veigy accumulated three well deserved aces while Vinciguerra had none. Despite having equal first serve efficiencies, De Veigy managed to gain 17 points of his 21 while Vinciguerra managed 16 from 26. De Veigy also registered two serve breaks, winning
the set 6-1 in his favour.
Vinciguerra fought back and with vengeance in the second set but fortunately for De Veigy, Vinciguerra couldn’t carry on his new found strength onto the next set. De Veigy’s serves were left crippled against much better performance
by De Veigy. Vinciguerra had an astonishing first serve accuracy of 77% and secured 13 of the 17 serve points. He also managed to save two of his only two breakpoints, which were in strong contrast to De Veigy who only managed to save one of the three breakpoints.
De Veigy also had two double faults, costing him the set 6-1.
Serving first, De Veigy’s extinguished spark reignited in the third and last set and he managed to win the precisely played set 6-3. The last set quickly built up and the score levelled at 2-2 before De Veigy registered two breakpoints
which eventually won him the set. De Veigy was able to win 71% of his service points as well as 44% of the return points. Vinciguerra meanwhile was able to grab an ace but in the end it proved to be futile against his opponent’s much better performance. The
set ended with a win for De Veigy at 6-3.
Overall the match witnessed a single ace, two double faults, 56% service points and 38% return points on the Swede’s part and three aces, seven double faults, 62% service points and 44% return points for the victor De Veigy. Vinciguerra
claimed 72 points in the match which just weren’t enough against De Veigy’s 79.
De Veigy is now set to face Potito Starace, seeded 8th in the tournament, in the second round of the Swedish Open 2011.
