Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen have no pressure at the World Tour Finals – Tennis News
Jonathan Marray of Great Britain and Frederik Nielsen of Denmark are getting so much success at the doubles event of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals that even they themselves are getting surprised after all this.
With full support of British crowd at their back, the British-Danish team stunned the former world number two team and second seeds at this event, Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, in their second round robin match. Two days earlier,
they had beaten the fifth seeded Indian team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna in their opening match.
Talking to the reporters at the end of their encounter with Mirnyi and Nestor, Marray revealed that the pair can’t believe what they are achieving at this season ending championship. The British player said that the main motive
of their combination was to enjoy the event, while playing in the best level they could, that’s why they didn’t have any pressure on them.
Marray stated, “We’re pretty surprised we're through after two matches. It wasn't something we really talked about. We were just coming here to try to enjoy and try to perform to the best of our abilities really. We can enjoy the
next match really. There's no pressure on us again really. It's really a great situation, I think.”
The British-Danish team didn’t even directly qualify for the event, as they were ranked outside the top eight. They made it to the event courtesy to the rule that a doubles team can play the ATP World Tour Finals if it has won
a Grand Slam and is ranked in top 20. Marray and Nielsen had won the Wimbledon title and finished at the 11th position in the Race to London.
Nielsen added, “We were aware of the fact we were underdogs, [the] lowest ranked team, a special exempt due to a loophole in the rules. That's obviously something different. At the same time we're comfortable being here level
wise.”
Despite all the success and lime light, Nielsen is sticking to his decision that he would not play doubles in the next season and instead feature in challenger events in singles category.
