Jonathan Marray believes expensive cars are a waste of money – Tennis News
Great Britain’s number one tennis player in doubles category, Jonathan Marray, has shared that he loves his current car and he has no plans to change it in near future.
Marray, who got a huge rise in his yearly prize money total in this season, was asked in a recent interview if he plans to buy a more expensive car than the present one.
The Brit replied, “I doubt it. They are expensive and a waste of money. Anyway, I’ve got one. I don’t think I need it – I think I’d only get a new car if I had a stupid amount of money, really. It’s still running and it gets me from A to B. I’m not home
a huge amount, I’m on the road most of the year and I’m not really into my cars, so it’s kind of pointless.”
The Sheffield, England resident earned $347,000 in prize money in 2012, which is almost half of what he had gathered since the start of his professional career till the end of 2011. The British player’s combined prize money for singles and doubles was $401,563
before the start of 2012.
Major chunk of this $347,000 was earned by Marray when he partnered Frederik Nielsen of Denmark to capture men’s doubles title at the Wimbledon Championships during summer. The Brit was ranked 76th in the world before the start of Wimbledon, needing a wild
card entry to enter the All England Club.
However, Marray and Nielsen stunned some of the best doubles team in the world to grab their maiden Grand Slam title. Courtesy to that effort, the British and Danish duo also qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena of London.
World Tour Finals is an elite tournament in which just top eight singles players and doubles teams participate. It was a huge experience for both Marray and Nielsen, as they had never been in that much spotlight before.
Sharing his experience of the season ending championships, Marray added, “It was unbelievable. The stadium was a joke. It’s not full when we start our match but by the end of it, just before the singles, it kind of gets juicy and it’s a full house so it
was great.”
Marray and Nielsen did not disappoint their local supporters, as they made a couple of huge upsets to reach the last-four stage at that event.
