Jonathan Massacand wins Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day one – 2012 Zurich International Meet
Jonathan Massacand smothered his opponents by winning gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke final on initial day of the 2012 Zurich International Meet in Switzerland on Saturday, February 25.
With the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, the tournament is of high importance as it allows the elite players to contest each other and find out their weaknesses before the battle royal.
Massacand faced strong competition from Mark Fischer throughout the event, but with his remarkable struggles, he strengthened his position for gold medal in the final lap. He hit the finishing wall with a timing of 56.49 seconds for gold medal.
He remained almost one second away from Fischer, who trailed him on the victory stand for second position by reporting a time of 57.45 seconds. Fischer also faced strong challenge from Flori Lang, who was just 0.23 seconds slower and settled on the concluding
wall with the timing of 57.68 seconds.
Moments later, the arena experienced ruthless aggression of Melanie Schweiger in the Women’s 100m butterfly. Schweiger crushed hopes of her opponents by clocking a wonderful effort of 1 minute and 02.60 seconds for the title of the event.
She was chased by Danielle Villars, who stayed 0.45 seconds behind her foregoing competitor and proved her eligibility for the second best spot with the timing of 1 minute and 03.05 seconds. Villars was chased by Sarah Silveira, who was only 0.02 seconds
apart and occupied third position of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 03.07 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 200m butterfly, where Sergio Zarro pocketed gold medal of the event. Zarro kept his challengers at a prominent distance and ensured his win in a time of 2 minutes and 10.78 seconds. He was trailed by Martin Leigh, who earned silver medal
of the swim by posting a time of 2 minutes and 13.36 seconds.
Julien Baillod secured third fastest spot of the race as he ended his swim in a time of 2 minutes and 13.84 seconds.
In addition, the championship ended after the completion of all scheduled events while the winners collected their accolades after the session.
