Jonathan Neale: McLaren in favour of in-season testing – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jonathan Neale has said that they would like some in-season testing as proposed by the president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) Jean Todt.
“Yes, a bit of in-season testing would be good. But we must make sure not to undo the good work that we've done with resource restrictions, because we've cut back for good reasons. But I also think that giving some young drivers some time in the car and
giving us the opportunity to train mechanics would be good,” he said.
Todt announced back in May 2011 that the teams should be allowed for some in-season testing in order to test and help new drivers in proving themselves. As a result, young drivers would get to experience Formula 1 in its full and this would be a great opportunity
for them to prove their worth to the teams of the sport.
“For me, it is a stupid decision to have no testing during the season. In the past it was crazy to have unlimited testing during the year, but to go from unlimited to completely banned, it is not the right measure,” said Todt.
He claims that not allowing young drivers to test is like taking a vital part of a Formula 1 experience away from them. In order to learn how the teams perform and work during a season, in-season testing must be allowed.
However, Neal believes that the teams should be allowed to test some of their mechanics as well during a Formula 1 season in order to improve their cars even more. He did not emphasize on this matter but stated that McLaren are going to favour in-season
testing.
We can expect the FIA to come up with a proper rule regarding this matter for the 2012 Formula 1 season in order to improve the sport and make it easier for young drivers to prove themselves.
With just 8 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season, it seems that the teams or the FIA cannot do much regarding this rule this year.
