Jonathan Neale: McLaren took some risks to close gap to Red Bull Racing – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s managing director Jonathan Neale has recently stated that the major reason for the team’s success since the past couple of races is that they took some major risks as a result of which, the gap between Red Bull Racing and McLaren has closed down
noticeably.
In fact, McLaren are now looking even better than RBR in terms of pace as the team was extremely fast during both the German and Hungarian Grands Prix.
“We've taken more risks. Some we got away with, and some of them we haven't. But Formula One is not a business or a sport where you can sit back because everybody else is trying so hard. The moment you hesitate then you know that you will go backwards relative
to the competition. And that's not why we're here,” Neale told the media.
However, McLaren are still lacking some qualifying pace as they are yet to defeat RBR in qualifying. Same is the case with Ferrari as they are improving a lot as well but still, they need to work on their qualifying pace in order to dominate RBR.
“When we managed to get some performance into the car the drivers started to relax a bit. They know that they have a competitive package underneath them and I think the whole system started to breathe a bit more easily because of that,” he added.
McLaren have secured 2 race wins in a row now and by the looks of it, it seems that the rest of the Formula 1 season is going to be very tough for the top running teams as they are all on an even keel now.
RBR are not as dominant as they were in the beginning of the season but unfortunately for Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel took a major lead during that time and now catching him is not going to be easy for either of them.
Vettel is more than 80 points ahead of them in the drivers’ standings and with just 8 races left in the season, all Alonso and Hamilton can do is perform consistently and hope for the opposite from Vettel’s side.
