Jonathan Neale: Next few races will be ‘hard fought’ between top running teams – Formula 1 news
Jonathan Neale, the managing director of McLaren has recently admitted that he is expecting some ‘hard fought’ races between the top running teams of the sport that is Red Bull Racing Team, Ferrari and McLaren.
He is hoping for the best for his team as McLaren have secured two back-to-back race wins at the previous two races of the season as a result of which, the team would head to the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix quite confidently.
“I think that certainly Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren all have cars that are capable of winning races, and we have to keep our focus and keep our momentum as we go through the next two low-downforce races as we look towards Singapore when we start to see
some changes in the circuit characteristics,” he said.
The three teams have been extremely close in terms of pace since the past couple of races of the 2011 Formula 1 season as a result of which the races are getting quite unpredictable and the championship run is becoming quite ‘competitive’ as well.
However, he did admit that the team is not in a comfortable position at the moment as they lost a handful of points at the Hungarian Grand Prix as a result of which they were not able to dominate in terms of championship which was required the most at that
point.
“I don't regard us as having the upper hand. I think we scored two well deserved victories. I argue that we should have been able to convert Lewis' and Jenson's positions in Hungary in to a one-two, so some disappointment there,” he added.
Other than that, Neale claims that unlike Ferrari, McLaren are still going to develop its current car the MP4-26 in order to close the gap as much as they can with the Red Bull Racing team.
However, one has to admit that Ferrari or McLaren’s chances of winning the championship this year are quite low as the current championship leader Sebastian Vettel is quite ahead of his rivals in the drivers’ standings.
