Jonathan Neale says McLaren is close to sign a new contract with Lewis Hamilton – Formula 1 news
Jonathan Neale, managing director of McLaren said that the team will soon sign a contact with Lewis Hamilton.
He said that the team is in dialogue with the British driver but he cannot disclose much for some reasons. He added that the team is trying its best to get on some common grounds with the British driver.
Neale told Sky Sports, “We are in dialogue at the moment, but for obvious reasons I can't speculate more than that at the moment. We are working very hard to find a common ground there.”
Answering the question whether both sides are interested in signing the contract Neale replied, “Very much so. Very much so.”
Furthermore, the managing director said that considering the points distribution, it is possible to make it to the championship because the difference in the points is achievable. He added that 25 points for a winner is an impressive place to be at, and
it requires some effort to make it to that position.
Moreover, he said that MP4-27 is quick. He added that their car was performing better than Ferrari at Budapest.
The managing director further added that Hamilton is a fighter, who loves challenge. Moreover, he said that if the British driver is supported well he will keep fighting and will go to the very end without giving up.
“Mathematically [the championship is] still possible. 25 points for a win is a good place to be and it doesn't take much to switch those,” he told. “I think as long as he feels that we are pushing the upgrades of the car and dealing with the issues as they
arise he'll fight to the end.”
McLaren is also thinking to introducing double DRS system in the remainder of the season, despite the fact that it will not be used in the following 2013 season. The teams have decided that they will not be using the expensive double DRS system in the next
season. McLaren are of the view that they should keep their attention towards other updates as well, because if they did not, it would become hard to compete this race of competition.
