Jonathan Papelbon helps Philadelphia Phillies to 3-2 victory against Colorado Rockies-MLB Update
Relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon put in a good performance as helps the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 9, 2012 in the second game of the three match series.
Rockies led the game from the beginning before the Phillies humbled them with two runs in the bottom of the third. However, when the score between the two teams tied the streak of scoreless innings ensued. Neither Philadelphia nor the Rockies were able to
score a couple of runs and post the lead before the start of the ninth.
Such a drought of runs and hits accompanied the extreme pressure when the teams entered into the ninth inning. At this stage of the game a single run from either side was to be decisive. Thus it was just the matter of playing well under pressure for attaining
victory.
Philadelphia took advantage of the situation. As they kept the Rockies scoreless in the top of the ninth, they added one run in the bottom of the same inning and embraced the stunning victory in turn.
Centre fielder John Mayberry Jr. turned out to be their hero in the last inning. The single that he struck toward the left resulted into the final run of the game as one of the base runners reached aboard.
Mayberry has expressed his pleasure after playing a major role in handing victory to the team. He boasts the fact that the Phillies still are capable of establishing winning streaks despite being unimpressive throughout the season.
"You can kind of sense the crowd's excitement, coming down the stretch of games with a chance to win," Mayberry said. "I don't think anybody in this clubhouse has written ourselves off."
Cole Hamels started for Philadelphia. He completed an impressive spell of seven innings. He struck-out six and gave up two runs. He did not earn the win as by the time he left the mound the score was tied. Papelbon clinched the victory instead as he threw
a scoreless last inning.
Notwithstanding the outcome of the match, the Phillies cannot put aside the fact that their offence is not performing consistently at the moment. In order to win games on a regular basis, they will be looking to work out issues in this area.
