Jonathan Quick makes 41 saves to help Los Angeles Kings topple Florida Panthers 2-1 -NHL Update
As Florida was head on winning their Thursday night matchup against Los Angeles, statistically they should have, but as Jonathan Quick transformed into a supernatural goalie by blocking 41 of 42 shots on his net, the Kings got the lift they needed to topple
the Panthers, 2-1, December 1, 2011, at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California, United States.
With all the shot blocking and scrambling, Los Angeles Kings lost their veteran defenseman, Willie Mitchell, who went out with an undisclosed lower-body injury during his first shift and did not make a comeback in the match. It is still unclear what concretely
happened to the player, but updates are expected in the upcoming days.
"We haven't got a full report yet," Los Angeles King head coach, Terry Murray, said. "The doctors and trainers are busy evaluating them, and they'll probably let me know a little bit more before I get away tonight. We'll have a better idea tomorrow."
Jack Johnson scored the go ahead goal for the Kings in the opening two minutes of the first period for his fifth of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, after which LA killed off two straight power play penalties along with four more
throughout the contest.
Dustin Brown extended the lead with less than six minutes to go in the second period during their first power play chance of the second 20 minute round, which ultimately turned out to be the game-winner, followed a minute later by Sean Bergenheim to finally
put Florida on the scoreboard, but failing to add any more after that.
One of LA’s top forwards, Mike Richards, also made his exit during the third period and sat on the benches with an undisclosed upper-body injury which was indicated to be the result of a roughing issue during the final moments of the second period.
"We didn't have our best game, and it wasn't pretty by any means," the Kings captain added. "Losing guys like Mitchell and Richards during the game is not easy. It's not easy when you're short-handed, but we found a way to win."
