Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell guide England to 327 runs against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751
England posted 327 runs against Ireland in their match of the ICC World Cup 2011, courtesy some strong batting performances by their top-order batsmen. The match is being played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore.
The toss was won by the English captain Andrew Strauss, and he elected to bat first in good batting conditions.
The start to the innings was very good for the Poms, as openers Strauss and Kevin Pietersen constructed a 91 run partnership. They smashed the ball to all parts of the park and didn’t allow the Irish bowlers to settle down.
Strauss, who turns 34 today, failed to capitalise on the start he got getting dismissed after scoring 34 runs. The veteran gave his wicket away playing a careless short.
Pietersen didn’t miss out on an opportunity to score his first half-century of the tournament. The flamboyant batsman got out after amassing 59 runs off just 50 balls. The fall of his wicket brought Ian Bell in the middle along with Jonathan Trott.
The experienced pair took the team’s total to 278, with a solid 167 run stand for the third wicket. They complemented each other nicely, as Trott played aggressive cricket and Bell rotated the strike over.
However, England just started losing wickets at the same time they did against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750. The third wicket fell on 278, and the lower middle-order failed to take advantage of the good platform laid by their top-order.
Both Bell and Trott missed out on centuries, as they were dismissed after scoring 81 and 92 respectively. At one stage, England looked to score more than 350 comfortably, but they managed 327 in the end.
This will be a major concern for the Poms, as their lower-middle order batsmen have struggled to perform in the tournament so far. Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior will be looking forward to get some runs under their belt, before heading to the knock-out
stages.
John Mooney helped the Irish to bounce back in the game with a few wickets towards the end of the match. He took four wickets for his team, and got some help by Trent Johntson, who grabbed two wickets in the match.
