Los Che midfielder, Jonathan Viera, believes it is imperative for his club to qualify for the Champions League next season
The calendar year 2012 did not end well for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863. The club has experienced many issues on and off the pitch. On the results and performance side, they were unable to impress.
Due to that reason Valencia lost further ground to their rivals for the much coveted spot for the Champions League and it was their former boss, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mauricio-c24899 Pellegrino, who took the fall for that.
Now that they have Ernesto Valverde, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonathan-c18993 Viera is hoping his team will find the stability and the confidence they need to push themselves forward and fight for the fourth position.
In his interview with UEFA, the attacking-midfielder mentioned the fact that his team qualified for the Champions League in the last four seasons. It is a record he wants to see continued.
“It’s very important because we’ve had four consecutive years in the top four and it’s almost like an obligation.”
However, the Spaniard admitted that it will be a tough task for them as their rivals are now in good form.
“It’s very complicated because our rivals are very strong, but we have to be there, both from a sporting and economic perspective.”
Moreover, the 23-year-old remarked on his team’s good performances in the Champions League. Valencia have managed to advance to the last-16 as they came second in the group.
“I think in the Champions League things have gone well, except the first match against Bayern Munich, but we learnt from that.”
Valencia are just not doing well on the road. They have managed to win only one out of their eight away matches so far this season. In total, they only accumulated five points out of a possible 24 on the road.
Jonathan Viera knows it is a dismal record that needs to change if they want to challenge for the fourth spot.
“At home in the League we have done well, but away it has been more difficult. It’s more of a psychological thing.”
Currently, Ernesto Valverde’s men are sitting on the 9th position with 24 points. They are seven points behind fourth-placed team, Malaga.
