The Australian International’s comments came in the wake of the Reds 3-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City on Wednesday in the fourth round of the League Cup.
The loss eliminated Brendan Rodgers team from the domestic English competition, further exposing their frailties and incapacity of putting up a commanding performance at home.
The Merseyside outfit were wayward right from the start and struggled to get a foothold in the game. The team’s inability to deal with the pace and fluent moves of the Swans in the preliminary stages forced the manager to bring in Suarez and Gerrard as second-half substitutes.
The Uruguayan International made an immediate mark, bagging a goal to give his team a lifeline. However, his brief cameo was not enough to deny Swansea a place in the quarterfinal.
Jones, who is guarding the goal in the absence of the injured http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-Reina-c29672, bemoaned the Reds poor performance on Wednesday.
The 30-year old shot-stopper believes that the fringe players in the squad should have stepped up to the plate to get the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 done in the absence of the senior players.
He also said that his team were increasingly becoming over-reliant on Suarez and Gerrard and it was a problem which needs to be solved immediately.
“A few players came in and got minutes, which was good, but it took us 45 minutes to get going and by that time it was too late as they had a grip on the game,” he told the reporters.
“In the end it took Stevie and Luis coming on to spark the game up and for the team playing in the cups you don't really want them coming on, you want to do it yourself.”
“It is a difficult one. Stevie is an icon for the club and he carries the club sometimes.”
Liverpool face another difficult game this weekend, when they take on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew’s Newcastle United at Anfield. Jones is expected to be replaced by Reina for the match, as the Spaniard is reported to have made a full recovery.
