Jones’ trainer believes the UFC was pressurising Jones – UFC News
While most fellow fighters, analysts and UFC officials have blamed light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for the cancellation of UFC 151 card, Jones’ trainer Mike Winkeljohn believes the organisation was trying to put the champion in a compromising position.
After being called ‘selfish’ by Sonnen and White, Jones’ trainer Mike came out to defend his fight. In a recent interview, Jones’ long time trainer revealed that the entire UFC 151 debacle was a way to pressurise the champion.
“How long has Chael been attacking Jon in the media and why? Hmm. He's a man known for moneymaking schemes and cheating by bending the rules,” said Winklejohn.
“And he's done this in various arenas. I think Chael played almost everyone like a fiddle. But I believe like a coward he tried to train and strike Jon when Jon wasn't looking. But hey, Jon is a warrior, and he - actually we - saw it coming. All I can say
to Chael is nice try.”
It should be noted here that Dan Henderson was injured three weeks prior to the cancellation of the show. In other words, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White had enough time to sort out the details with Jones and Sonnen but he did
not.
Jones rejected White’s offer to fight Chael Sonnen saying he would not do so with just an eight-day notice. Later on, in a press conference, White blamed Jones for the entire scenario saying that the champion act selfish. Similarly, Sonnen called Jones ‘selfish’
as well in his recent interview.
However, Jones believes his decision was right. He tweeted, “And therefore those skilled in war bring the enemy to the field of battle and are not brought there by him - Sun Tzu.”
This was the first time Dana White had to cancel a fight card in his 11-year career, which definitely was an embarrassment to him. Since Jones’ rejection to fight Sonnen was the major cause of the card being cancelled, White and others believe the champion
could have saved the show. However, the fact that Jones did not want to fight Sonnen on such a short notice does not make him responsible for the disaster.
