Jonny Flynn’s return still uncertain
Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn was projected to return this week after undergoing hip surgery during the off-season, but the former Syracuse stand-out remains on the injured
list and his team declined to give a timetable for his return.
According to Flynn, the recurring pain in their recent workouts is making it difficult for him and their team trainers to decide on his return date because they want to make sure that he
is 100 per cent healthy in his first game this season.
“I'm not sure right now,” said Flynn when asked about his return date. “Every day I come in, I feel different every single day. The progress is going well. I am just trying to get my legs
back under me. I cannot remember anything remotely close to being out this long from playing ball. I can see the light, but I still have to be cautious.”
Flynn, who averaged 13.5 points and 4.4 assists per game in his rookie year last season, has been practising with the team for two weeks, including full-contact drills, but the sixth-overall
pick in the 2009 draft admitted that he is experiencing soreness after every
practice and workout.
“I'm doing a lot of things at one time that I haven't done in three months,” Flynn said. “I have to get used to that.”
Timberwolves head coach Kurt Rambis also believes that the 21-year-old point guard is still “ways away” from making his debut this season, based on what he saw in their recent practices.
He added that they expected Flynn to be sidelined for three to four months after the surgery he had on 27 July that repaired a torn labrum in his hip.
Rambis, whose team currently have a 4-9 record, also admitted that they are planning to play Flynn in the NBA Development League to evaluate his condition before making his return to the
Timberwolves this season.
