Jonny Lomax looking forward to prove himself as Saints’ best scrum-half
Jonny Lomax is all set to display his full form at the scrum-half with the Saints Helens in 2012, where until now he has already spent two years.
The 21-year-old has performed so well during his term with Saints especially during their sixth successive Grand Final win in 2011. His on-field brilliance also gained him the Player of the Year award the same year, for his praiseworthy on filed contributions.
The way Lomax proved himself as an exceptional talent in the world of rugby was commendable. Spark in him has been also acknowledged by Steve McNamara, England’s coach, who wants to feature Lomax in 2013 World Cup alongside Sam Tomkins, the Wigan full-back
who agreed to a five-year deal with the franchise.
On his call-up in McNamara’s pack in the England’s Elite game’s pack, Lomax shared, “The goal was 17 games and anything more was a bonus. To be called into the squad was massive.”
Lomax has been booked at Helens until 2015, where he is all set to create a lasting impact pulling on Sean Long’s No.7 jersey for so many years to follow up. He is all excited to fill in the role left behind by Long, who has inspired him all along to reach
the level he is enjoying at the moment.
While expressing his views about stepping into the shoes of Long, Lomax said, “To wear the shirt that Longy wore for 10 years or more, it's a bit of a dream really. Longy was a massive influence, he's done things you couldn't imagine other people doing.
I was lucky enough to play with him in a few games. He's a genius, I learned so much from him even playing on the wing.”
Previously, Lomax has played at the centre, wing and stand-off position as well, which explains why there is versatility in his game. His footwork and speed are his key attributes, which is why he is the first choice after Kyle Eastmond, to replace an important
position left behind by Long. Eastmond could not take up the scrum half’s role because of his rude gesture to Saints fans, when they lost to Harlequins in March.
It will be interesting to see how well the utility back settles down in his newly assigned role in the brand new year.
