Jonny Lomax of St. Helens will make his third Final appearance against Leeds Rhinos – Rugby League
On Saturday, October 8, Jonny Lomax of St. Helens confirmed that he is marching into the third Grand Final showdown for Saints against Leeds Rhinos, which is scheduled to be staged at Old Trafford tonight.
Lomax had previously set a target of playing more than 16 games this season. Last year he had played the same number of games and was looking to match the record this year but was unable to do so. While commenting about his personal goals for this year before his meeting with the Rhinos, Lomax said, "It's been pretty surreal. If I had played 17 matches this season, I would have been happy. But we got a couple of injuries leading into the first game and I played centre, ended up at scrum-half and stayed there ever since.”
The prop was unable to reach what he had been aiming for, throughout the current season amidst the toll of injuries. He was playing at the centre position at the start of the season but ended up in scrum-half’s role towards the season wrap-up.
Lomax also commented on Sean Long, who is a huge inspiration for the player. Lomax is currently wearing Long’s old jersey and is excited and happy to be in the same role that his role model was in before.
Lomax further added, “To wear the shirt that Longy wore for 10 years or more, it's a bit of a dream really. Longy was a massive influence, he's done things you couldn't imagine other people doing.I was lucky enough to play with him in a few games. He's a genius, I learned so much from him even playing on the wing.”
Lomax booked the centre’s spot during last year’s Grand Final defeat against Wigan Warriors, but his position had been in a state of flux since then. Then he was moved to take over Kyle Eastmond’s position of scrum-half, after the player had been sacked for making an unacceptable gesture to Saints fans in the month of March, when they had to face an embarrassing defeat from Harlequins.
Lomax has also been called up by England’s squad by their head coach, Steve McNamara, after Lomax’s impressive 30-16 win over Leeds at Headingley.
