Jonny Venters struggles as Atlanta Braves lose to Milwaukee Brewers 1-4 - MLB Update
Relief pitcher Jonny Venters spoils the impressive beginning by starter Mike Minor as the Atlanta Braves lose to the Milwaukee Brewers 1-4 at Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the first match of the three game series on September 10, 2012.
With one run lead from the fifth inning onward, the Braves were heading toward winning the game. The impeccable show that starter Mike Minor fared on the mound had put them on course. However, the three runs that Jonny Venters leaked later on in the game
proved disastrous for their quest. The runs given up by him dismantled Atlanta's lead.
Despite the fact Atlanta struck 10 hits in the match, they failed to convert them into runs. On the other hand Brewers managed just four hits and yet they went past the Braves by three runs.
This shows their ability to make the most of the opportunities that arose in the game. Unlike Atlanta, that struggled in the situations where a couple of hits will have helped them in posting a substantial total on the score-board.
Minor threw a little more than five innings for Atlanta. While he was scoreless, he struck-out eight. If he had continued throwing, the Braves may have stopped the Brewers from launching a counter-attack late in the innings.
While Atlanta’s relievers are known for protecting the lead, on Monday it was not the case. Venters cost three runs which became the undoing of the whole team. He rightly suffered the loss.
Venters is fully aware of the extent of the damage he caused his side by leaking runs at a crucial juncture of the game. He lauds the contribution of Minor but he acknowledges the fact that he failed to carry out his job properly.
"Mike threw the ball so well and my job is to come in and hold them down. I didn't do my job. I gave it up. I felt like I got there quick, but I rushed it and made a bad throw," Venters said.
The Braves will be looking to win the last two games of the series. The team is hoping for some scoreless innings from the relievers in their upcoming games.
