Jonny Wilkinson reclaims all time top Test points record – Rugby Union update
Jonny Wilkinson, the England’s fly half is back and played down the significance of regaining the record of highest all time Test points score.
The 2003 World Cup hero and England’s rugby legend came off the bench against France in England’s 17-9 victory in Six Nations most anticipated match ever. Wilkinson slotted a penalty that saw him getting back his record of all time top Test points from Dan
Carter, the All Black hero.
Toby Flood was replaced by Jonny Wilkinson in 50th minute. Flood was suffering through an ankle injury and went off on time, before things could have gotten worse for him. Wilkinson came in and landed a 46 meter penalty pretty decently.
The new record for highest Test point score is 1190 and Dan Carter stands at second position right behind him with 1089 points. Wilkinson will surely be increasing this lead to a few more points as England looks in good shape and Grand slam now seems possible
for them. With a couple of matches left in Six Nations, the Toulon number ten will be looking forward to boot a few more penalties and confirm the title to his name which was snatched by Dan carter recently.
England has to play Ireland and Scotland the coming week, while Dan carter will be getting back to the international scene in July for the Tri Nations.
Jonny Wilkinson seemed quite surprised on the contrary and was unaware of the developments taking place in the history books. He said, “They informed me that Dan Carter had taken the lead in the test points record and I said 'awesome for him'. And then they
told me, 'Evidently, you are very close to claiming it back.”
Wilkinson added casually, “I did doubt if I would get a penalty now if I came on and it came up first the thing after my arrival. The record doesn't mean that much to me, it is just nice to get straight into the game.”
Flood admitted that he felt guilty for getting off the field and leaving Wilkinson with a tough goal. On the other hand Wilkinson thought it as a good sign for him, as he wanted to play for his national side, something he has desperately wanted to do in
recent times.
Wilkinson gladly said, “With a kick like that, you are then going back to receive the kick-off. It makes you feel like you are starting afresh.”
