Joo Ven Soong emerges as Champion in Smiling Fish International 2012 – Badminton Update
Men’s Singles shuttler, Joo Ven Soong of Malaysia seized the crown in the Smiling Fish International Series after beating Khosit Phetpradab during the final day in Thailand on May 6, 2012.
The spirited campaigner Ven Soong showed a strong character in an epic tussle of 70 minutes and silenced the crowd with his thundering performance in all three games.
On the other hand, the native shuttler could not pocket the benefits of home ground and crowd advantage as he knelt down after reading concluding margin of 21-14, 17-21 and 21-18.
In first set of match, the Malaysian lad launched a brisk attack to serve the notice of his supremacy. He gathered few quick points in start and got into commanding position.
Ven Soong pushed his challenger in all areas of court and managed to place a total of 11 points in first half of the set.
After the mid-game break, he kept his opponent grounded with some nonstop rallies which helped him to reach at game point situation in a convincing manner.
He ended opening game by standing seven steps ahead of his rival in final total of 21-14.
However, the Thai campaigner aroused his supporters’ hope by storming back in the next game. Khosit Phetpradab, who also was third seed in home event, read his competitor’s game early and masterly coped with his tactics.
This time, he opened the game in more impressive manner and did not spare any loop-hole. He gained a comfortable lead with his power packed attack.
The young Ven Soong could not stand in front of this invasion and kept struggling in first half of the set. Though he accelerated his pace in later part of the game and successfully narrowed the gap but it was not enough to seal a straight-set victory.
Khosit Phetpradab struck hard when it mattered and finished crucial set with a favourable margin of 21-17.
Both contenders exhibited their prime skills in the decider to claim the crown. The match kept swinging between them until the last shot was played.
They remained close in score position all the way to game point situation and this race finally ended when the lower ranked shuttler Ven Soong hit the mark with concluding figure of 21-18.
