Joost Luiten starts well at the Lyoness Open – Golf news
Joost Luiten of Netherlands fired a seven-under par 65, in the opening round of the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity, to take the second spot on the leaderboard, on Thursday, June 6, 2013.
The tournament, which is being staged at the Diamond Country Club, is sanctioned by the European Tour, and is offering a total prize fund of €1,000,000 to the participants.
Luiten got off to a stunning start, as he birdied five of the first six holes that he played, followed by three par putts to reach the turn in five-under.
He then gained another shot at the short 11th hole, prior to his only dropped shot of the day came at the 13th hole, where the Dutch failed to save the par.
Unfazed, the Bleiswijk resident bounced back with another two birdies – at the 15th and the 17th hole– to complete an amazing run and enter into contention for the top spot, early in the tournament.
Luiten, whose only European Tour victory came in 2011, when he secured a one stroke victory over Daniel Chopra at the Iskandar Johor Open, is now confident to make a strong run in the remaining three rounds, in a bid to add another title to his tally.
“It always feels good to have a great score in the first round,” said Luiten. “I was four under after four and that keeps the round going. I hit a lot of fairways and greens and the putter was my best friend today.”
“The course is starting to dry out but you don't get any roll on the ball. The greens are very good so you can really make some putts. The weather was perfect today and there was no wind, which was good because when it's windy it's a very tough golf course,”
added the 27-year-old.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he also said that he will try to make use of his experience at Diamond Country Club, to score low in the remaining three rounds – he finished third in the 2011 edition of the event, when it was called as the
Austrian Golf Open presented by Lyoness.
