Jordan Harrison seizes Men’s 1500m freestyle gold – EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Jordan Harrison of Miami, QLD seized gold medal of the Men’s 1500m freestyle on day five of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Sunday, September 16.
Matthew Levings was expected to dominate the final of the 1500m event as he had a top seedtime of 14 minutes and 47.77 seconds but he failed to withstand gruelling efforts of Harrison in the sixty-lap event.
The 17-year-old Harrison outsmarted his challengers over the finishing end as he proved his mettle for the title of the distant freestyle event. He remained considerably ahead of his following swimmer from the start and secured the crown by finishing first.
Harrison stayed considerably ahead of his closest competitor and tapped the wall for gold medal by producing a time of 14 minutes and 43.26 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by his team-member, Levings, who stayed nearly four body lengths behind and surfaced on the finishing end as second position holder by reporting a time of 14 minutes and 47.01 seconds.
The silver medallist was trailed by Mack Horton of Melbourne VIC, who remained only 0.71 seconds away from overpowering his preceding swimmer and touched the wall with a timing of 14 minutes and 47.72 seconds for bronze medal.
Subsequently, fourth finest qualifying position was secured by Ethan Owens of Clovercrest, SA, who stayed more than half a minute slower from his foregoing finisher and transpired on the finishing end with an effort of 15 minutes and 33.89 seconds.
Owens was traced by Martin Cremin of Great Britain, who remained almost 10 seconds apart and reported an effort of 15 minutes and 43.46 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth best qualification spot of the event was obtained by Sho Nishimoto of Unattached, NSW, who stayed 4.08 seconds away from his foregoing finisher and completed his race in a time of 15 minutes and 47.54 seconds.
Harrison received massive admiration from the crowd for his gruelling efforts in the distant freestyle event and expressed his desire of continuing the same at forthcoming events. In addition, Harrison was happy with his accomplishment and collected medal
after the event.
