Jordan Harvey red card forces Michael Farfan debut for Philadelphia Union – Major League Soccer news
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/San-Jose-Earthquakes-c40434, the quartet lost one man to a red card. Harvey was made to leave the field in 41st minute of the game.
Head coach Peter Nowak replaced http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roger-Torres-c31530 with Michael Farfan to man the spot left vacant by Harvey. Farfan made his MLS debut in the first minute of the second half to add strength to the left-back position. His twin brother Gabriel Farfan had already served the team earlier this term. Even though first team opportunity dawned on Michael a while later, the 22-year-old enjoyed a debut one could only hope for.
The attacking midfielder by nature was informed at the half-time that he will be off the bench in the second half. The player was nervous and excited at the same time despite having played for the Union in a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifier. “Playing in front of the Sons of Ben is awesome,” Farfan said following the game. “To be at home with so many people on your side is an amazing feeling. Also to be 0-0, down a man, and winning the game is pretty special.”
Farfan’s presence in the back-line was immediately noticed by both his team members and Nowak. In spite of his inexperience, the player served well to keep the opposition at bay. Nowak praised the youngster. “Big praise goes to Michael Farfan,” Nowak said. “We wanted to make sure to keep our composure and have the chance to go forward with Michael’s speed. Basically we played three in the back because he was coming up and down.”
Even though the player has been in the midfield throughout his college career, University of North Carolina, his transition into the defence was rather smooth. “It’s not too different – just a little more defending,” said Union’s second round pick of the 2011 SuperDraft. “It’s nice to play with left backs and right backs that can get forward and help on the attack as well.”
Harvey’s availability for the next game is subject to the red card suspension reversion. Farfan, despite deputising well for the 27-year-old defender, is unlikely to get a start should Harvey return for the next fixture.
