Jordan Lawler clinches victory at Be The Influence Surf Pro – Surfing news
Australia’s Jordan Lawler walked away with the overall victory at the inaugural Be The Influence Surf Pro, the final event on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Australasia Pro Junior Series, after getting the better of fellow countryperson
Jack Duggan in the finals that went down at Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
Both Lawler and Duggan had been showcasing an ominous form throughout the course of the event. With the two surfers pitted against each other in the battle for the overall win, the huge crowd in attendance expected to witness plenty of fireworks and understandably
so.
It turned out to be an intense battle, with both the surfers fighting tooth-and-nail until the end, thus making the finals a real nail-biter.
With only two minutes left for the buzzer to go off during the finals, Lawler found himself sitting in second place. However, he suddenly exhibited a real urgency and desperation in his surfing and stepped-up his efforts to finding a score big enough to
get him past his rival on the scoreboard.
The Narrabeen-based surfer managed to lock a juicy wave just in to give himself a chance of taking away the lead from Duggan. Making the most of the opportunity, he pulled off a massive turn and exquisite air-reverse to put himself in the lead and eventually
walk away with the win.
Lawler described his success in the intense finals as incredible and further added that it felt amazing to collect his first ASP event victory in from of his family, which was present at Coffs Harbour to support him.
Duggan was just a little bit disappointed to have let the victory slip out of his hands after coming so close. A runner-up finish was his best result in his ASP Pro Junior career and he was glad to have done this good in the event.
“I’ve had a good year, I got a 3rd in Newcastle and a 2nd here so I feel really good,” Duggan said. “He (Lawler) was trying to get me to catch all of these little waves and I was letting them go. Then this one came through and he got it, did a nice air and
he got the score. Congratulations to Jordy, he surfed really well and I’m stoked for him. It’s really good for Be The Influence to be involved with this event and for us surfers to spread a good message to all the kids.”
Be the Influence Surf Pro marked the conclusion of this year’s ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series.
