Jordan Lyles’ pitching helps Houston Astros overpower Chicago Cubs, 7-3 – MLB Update
Houston Astros’ starter, Jordan Lyles was impressive with the ball as he pitched seven innings with an ERA of 1.29 in the Astros’ 7-3 win against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Chicago on May 31.
Lyles gave away two runs on five hits with one earned run. He struck out four batters and did not permit a walk on 92 pitches.
The batters were unable to put any runs in the first three innings. Kosuke Fukudome lined out to short-stop position while Darwin Barney grounded out to second base at the bottom of the third inning. Brett Wallace homered (390 feet) towards right-field to
give the Astros an initial 1-0 lead.
Pitchers raised the potential of their teams by delivering accurate throws and controlled the scoring of runs by the batters. The Astros’ Manager Brad Mills watched the outstanding pitches of Lyles and said, “He was throwing everything for strikes, keeping
guys off-balance, throwing exactly how we saw him throw in spring training. He lived up to every expectation of every Astros fan, the management, the organization ... everything.”
The score-board was unmoved until the seventh inning. The Cubs went ahead 3-1 during the eighth inning when the batters contributed three runs. Brad Snyder, Tyler Colvin and Barney each singled in the eighth to complete the three-run campaign. Carlos Pena
occupied the third base at the end of eighth inning.
Ninth inning completely went in favour of the Astros as they blasted six runs. Wallace, Chris Johnson, Michael Bourn, Matt Downs and Clint Barmes each contributed five runs jointly while Hunter Pence struck a one-run homer (392 feet) towards left-field.
The Astros were leading 7-3 to end the game.
Carlos Zambrano pitched well but not enough to clinch a win for his team. He threw eight innings with an ERA of 4.23 and allowed just one run on seven hits. Carlos was able to strike-out seven batters and did not permit a walk on 111 pitches. The Cubs’ reliever
Carlos Marmol was too expensive as he gave away six runs on five hits.
