Jordan Spieth starts his campaign at the Valero Texas Open – Golf News
Two-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion Jordan Spieth carded a three-over par 75 in the opening round of the Valero Texas Open, on Thursday, April19, 2012.
He is the only amateur participating in the $6.2 million event at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio.
Moreover, this is his second event on the PGA Tour in 2012, as he participated in the Northern Trust Open, early in the season.
Spieth is considered as one of the favourites to win the tournament this year. However, his performance in the first round was completely unimpressive, as he suffered four bogeys against a lone birdie that came on the final hole of the course.
Yet, he believes that his score does not portray his real performance on the course. According to him, he hit the ball well but was unlucky to card four bogeys in the end.
"I look back right now and say I played better than I scored today. That happens sometimes, but I know if I keep striking the ball like I did today, I'm going to shoot a lower score out there," Spieth said.
According to the first-round stats, he was among the top-17 players in hitting the greens in regulations with 66.7 per cent record.
However, he missed some par putts early in the round that took him over par in the round. Yet, he managed to make a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to get a boost while entering the second round on Friday.
"Lately it seemed that my putter had been picking me up, but today I burned a lot of edges. (The birdie) made me smile at the end of the round. It redeemed a couple of holes, definitely," Spieth said.
Meanwhile, Matt Every surged to the top of the leaderboard after carding a course-record score of nine-under par 63.
His score was better than last year’s tournament score of eight-under par, registered by Brendan Steele, which was enough to take the victory in the event.
Hunter Haas took the second place after carding a flawless round of six-under par 66.
